William Sr. was living in Long Cane (Abbevill e) in 1784 and did not move to Cherokee Ford (Cherokee Heights) until 178 5; therefore John probably was born in Abbeville. A later mi ll at the same site was called Price's Mill, which operated into the 1920' s. Caldwell's Mill was in the same area or was another name for one of t he above mills. During an interview with Lewis Speer on 3 July 1994 in Lowndesville, he ga ve the following account of the drownning. Lewis' story orginally came fr om Gordon Speer. John drove his horse-drawn buggy across the flooded riv er in spite of warnings that it was too dangerous. The traces came loose a nd when he reached down to reconnect them, he fell in and was washed away.
